Overview
Background
UNDP is the global development network of the United Nations, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. In December 2001, the UN Secretary General requested that the UNDP Administrator and Chair of the UN Development Group act as campaign manager and scorekeeper for the MDGs within the United Nations System.
As we have now passed the mid-point between the adoption of the Goals and the target date of 2015, the MDGs remain achievable but increasingly require a deeper insight of the problems, solutions, and collective efforts and resources needed to accelerate progress, particularly in the context of multiple crises.
2013 marks the year for a comprehensive review of progress and trends on the MDGs including the discussion of a new development agenda beyond 2015. The Secretary-General is expected to submit a comprehensive 2013 global report on the implementation of the MDGs with concrete recommendations for action to ensure that the MDGs are achieved by their target date. The 2013 MDG Review process promises to be an important opportunity to galvanize actions and the efforts needed over the final 2 years and make unprecedented progress on meeting the MDGs by the 2015 target date.
UNDP has already begun preparing and working on the 2013 Review. UNDP, for instance, is working to:
- Build and engage a global coalition (UN, BWI, governments, CSO, private foundations) leading up to the 2013 MDG Review Summit by organizing a Global MDG Conference;
-
Ensure that the 2013 Review provides deeper insight as to why some countries are making progress on some MDGs and why some are lagging behind against each goal, and thus what is working and what is not;
-
Ensure that the 2013 Review is forward looking beyond 2015, while being deeply cognizant that accelerated efforts and collective renewed action are required to meet the MDGs by 2015;
-
Generate and implement a public advocacy campaign at the country, regional and global levels that serves to rally the international community around accelerating progress on the MDGs;
-
Provide a coherent policy voice and influence regional processes to ensure strategic re-positioning and consistency with recent global developments.
