Overview : During the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Project (1993 – 2012) more than 5000 women’s groups were supported to develop into self-reliance groups (SRG). These SRG were involved in a number of activities, ranging from microfinance savings and credit to engagement in village development. Towards the end of the HDI project, the SRG were encouraged expand their work from the village to village cluster level (combining multiple village SRG in cluster groups) and finally to form an SRG federation at the township level. To date, there are 31 such township level clustered SRG (TLSRG) in Myanmar, which are composed of almost 2000 SRGs and some 22500 members Now, expanding from the village level, this network of rural women’s group is active at the township level at their various localities finding and defining their role for township development and aspires to connect the various TLSRG at the national level with the vision to bringing rural women’s voices to national development issues. In early 2014 the first national level gathering of representatives of the 31 groups was facilitated by UNDP in Yangon, setting out also the vision to form a national federation. UNDP Myanmar would like to document the journey of selected SRGs and their leaders across the country. The purpose of this assignment is prepare a script, shoot and produce a documentary film that will trace the journey of a number of women leaders involved in SRGs. The aim is to feature the span of their work at the village level for their families, the contribution they make to the local communities and village development, up to more recent engagement at the township level. This should include mapping their achievements and challenges, and documenting their new role and activities at the township level. The film should shed light on what they have achieved by today as individuals and as groups, the personal motivation and drivers of individuals and leaders, their vision for the groups they are engaged in and leading, as well as aspirations for a future engagement at a national level.
