| Overview : As one of the newest nations in the world, Timor-Leste has made significant achievements in the road to democratization and economic growth; the country is working hard to accelerate the progress in its long road to achieve sustainable economic development. To support the efforts of Timor-Leste, UNDP ‘Mobilize Social Businesses to Accelerate MDG Achievement in Timor-Leste’ project (Social Business Project) in partnership with Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment is piloting various approaches to promote social businesses in Timor-Leste as a means to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in Timor-Leste with ensured sustainability.
One of the social business models that the Social Business Project is supporting is the development of agro-transformative industries as a mean for linking farmers to inclusive market and economic growth. Instant noodles is one of the major imports in Timor-Leste and hence the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Environment would like to explore the possibility of establishing a local fortified instant noodles industry that can serve as multiple national objectives: creation of market for local agro-products, import substitution and also supply quality fortified food blend that can be used both for commercial consumptions and targeted feeding programmes. |
