Overview :

Government of India, with UNDP as the lead agency, is implementing a Global Environment Facility (GEF) supported project “Mainstreaming Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Conservation into Production Sectors in the Godavari River Estuarine Ecosystem, Andhra Pradesh”. The project will focus specifically on removing the key barriers to mainstreaming environmental management considerations into major production activities that are impacting the Godavari region, with special focus on Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary. The main components of the project include: a) Sectoral mainstreaming including knowledge management for coastal and marine biodiversity conservation; b) Institutional Capacity Development; and c) Sustainable Community Livelihoods and Natural Resource Use in the Godavari River Estuary.

In this connection, as a critical step in mainstreaming biodiversity conservation considerations into the operations of economic production sectors, a draft biodiversity-friendly Strategic Plan (SP) has already been prepared which will be a base document. The Landscape Level Plan (hereto referred to as the Plan) has to further streamline the broad, strategic vision for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation activities into production sectors operating in EGREE. The Plan will look at current land uses in the project area and assess how existing/ prospective practices of the different sectors can be made more compatible with the conservation needs of the EGREE with proper mapping and identification of biodiversity rich areas of the region. The Plan will be developed for a long time frame (at least 10 years). Following focused consultations, a vision for integrated management of all major sectors in the EGREE  (e.g. fisheries, aquaculture, salt pans, manufacturing units, oil & gas, industries, urban planning, ports & shipping, tourism, livelihoods/ subsistence, conservation i.e., management of the CWLS and adjoining forests has to be captured into the Plan ) shall form an integral part of the Plan.

The experts will prepare an implementable coastal and marine landscape and seascape plan for EGREE that addresses biodiversity conservation concerns in the region and can be incorporated into the relevant district level plan.
