Project Concept Form
Overview :

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), implemented by UNDP, provides communities and civil society organizations in developing and transition countries with grants to enable them to implement projects in the focal areas of climate change, biodiversity, sustainable forest management, land degradation, international waters, and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)/chemicals. These community-based projects must meet environmental objectives while simultaneously supporting poverty reduction and local empowerment objectives. The GEF SGP works in 126 countries all over the world. The Programme is a GEF corporate programme, implemented by United Nations Development Programme and executed by United Nations Office for Project Services.

In 2011 SGP and the Australian Aid programme (AusAID) launched a Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) programme covering 38 SIDS countries in response to the critical need to help island communities adapt to climate change, which further intensified SGP's environment and sustainable development work in these regions. In 2013 the programme was launched in the Caribbean for Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Building on the SGP’s Caribbean SIDS Community-Based Adaptation project, GEF SGP will seek to build a broad partnership with other international and regional agencies to increase the impact and sustainability of their actions through knowledge management and outreach. One vehicle to achieve this is the development of the SIDS ADAPT Programme – an environmental and sustainable livelihoods educational programme that promotes climate change community-based adaptation strategies.
