| Overview : The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), being the implementing agency of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is providing assistance to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management, and Meteorology under the Government of The Solomon Islands to implement the “Integrating global environment commitments in investment and development decision-making” (IGECIDDM). This project is a response to the key capacity constraints identified in country’s NCSA, namely ineffective legislation and policy framework; institutional, technical and capacity weaknesses; lack of public awareness and information sharing for sound environmental management and decision making; lack of mainstreaming environmental considerations, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development across government programmes; and gaps in human capacity and development. The goal of the project is to deliver global environmental benefits across the three Rio Conventions through reduced deforestation and forest degradation by strengthening policy coordination and planning mechanisms. To achieve the goal, the project is organized into three inter-related components. - Strengthening institutional capacities for improved implementation of Rio Convention obligations
- Strengthening the Development Consent Process to more effectively mainstream Rio Convention obligations
- Strengthening awareness and understanding of REDD+ as a strategy to meet Rio Convention obligations
Under component 3, in April 26, 2016, a Letter of Agreement (LOA) has been signed by Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and UNDP purposely to fulfil output 3.2 of the project. Under the LOA, SINU has developed a text book to be used by the university and a high school teacher resource to be used by high school teachers in the country. The idea behind these materials is they will help contribute to improving students and teacher’s level of awareness and understanding of environmental issues affecting their day to day life. The book is aimed at enabling students to think critically about why global environmental issues (for instance climate change) is a concern, how it affects our lives and what we can do as global citizens to adapt and mitigate its impact. Furthermore, the book provides a link between the multilateral environmental agreements (such as the Rio Conventions) and national frameworks and polices, and some of the good community practices that can be applied and scaled up in our local communities to help safeguard the environment. Likewise, the teacher resource guide is aimed at equipping high school teachers (especially ones living in the rural areas who have limited access to resources) to teach their pupils effectively on this topic.
