Overview

The South African government through the Department of Energy in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing the project, Market Transformation through the Introduction of Energy Efficiency Standards and the Labelling of Household Appliances in South Africa (S&L Project). The project is designed with the objective of removing inefficient appliances from the South African market by imposing new minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for certain appliances. The project forms an integral part of the measures and interventions aimed at reducing electricity consumption in the residential sector and by extension will contribute towards the reduction of the country’s carbon footprints. The project will also pave the way for the continuous introduction of energy efficiency improvements into the appliances and equipment industry.

National government supported by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), and in consultation with industry and all affected and interested bodies selected 12 household electrical appliances (white goods) to participate in the first phase of the projects.

Service required:

Existing Appliances: Asses the existing MEPS for the twelve appliances and determine whether there is scope (through technological advances, market changes, or for any other reason to improve them.

New Appliances: The study will identify the new set of electrical equipment (not limited toresidential appliances) that could be considered for the project. In selecting the equipment, the report must detail the process followed and provide sound technical economic, financial reasoning which is based on empirical evidence.
