Overview :

The Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs through Gender Affairs Department (GeAD) is responsible for coordinating implementation of the national gender programme. The Ministry has adopted gender mainstreaming as a key strategy for sustainable development and as such has integrated it into the development process. Specifically, the Department provides guidance and leadership on gender through developing and monitoring implementation of nationally approved policies and programmes. The Department implements its mandate through internal Divisions which deal with specific issues such as Policy development, Research, and Women’s Economic Empowerment. Through the Women’s Economic Empowerment Programme, GeAD supports women with financial grants to start income generating activities which is intended to ultimately result in them attaining financial independence. This should further enable them to be weaned-off Government social safety nets.

The Programme is complementary to the current national planning frameworks ( Vision 2036 and the National Development Plan 11 and related local development plans), which have been designed to anchor and drive national and local efforts to achieve inclusive and sustainable national economic growth, create jobs and eradicate poverty, and to localize the Global Agenda 2030 on sustainable development. It is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework [UNSDF] and the UNDP Country Programme Document [CPD] for 2017-2021, which aim to monitor the use of increasingly diminishing resources for maximum development gains.
