| Overview : Communities within northern Kgalagadi were given a donation of camels by the Department of Tourism who had inherited the camels from the Botswana Police with a view that they will be used for tourism purposes. This was to be part of the implementation of the Community Based Natural Resources management (CBNRM) programme, where communities are encouraged to engage in income generating projects utilising natural resources within their area. Camels were seen as something that could be utilized by the communities to diversify their income streams which at that time was solely based on hunting. However a lack of strategy and adequate planning on future utilization of the camels have rendered them not useful to the communities. During its inception stage in the 1990s CBNRM programme was mainly focused on the use of wildlife resources by communities and was concentrated in the northern part of Botswana (Ngamiland and Chobe) hence the projects in that part of the country are well developed. However, CBNRM projects have diversified with some communities engaged in heritage tourism while others are into utilization of veld products. Some of the non-Wildlife CBNRM include heritage sites projects such as Tsodilo hills, Mogonye, Old Palapye, Goo Moremi and Kgetsi ya Tsie. Botswana Government through the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) has invested in some projects in partnership with Communities. Some of those projects include, Goo Moremi Resort, Tsabong Camel Park, Lepokole Nature Reserve and Seboba Park. The Camel Park in Tsabong is one of the projects that communities could learn from but there is a need to identify other options available for the utilization of camels. To that end, the Government of Botswana in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Botswana invites competent consultancy firms to carry out a feasibility study on the economic utilization of camels in Botswana. |
