Overview :

1. Overview of the Ecodriving simulator

The simulator should be able to provide training on truck and bus driving. It would consist of the following components:

  • The driver’s station (the site where drivers will receive their training) including
    • The base frame mounted on a dynamic platform, which replicates vertical shifting, pitching and rolling movements.
    • A cabinet housing the computer.
    • Three 55” LCD screens for the visual system
  • The trainer’s post (the site where the trainer will prepare the simulation session, and will monitor and assess the training session).
  • The observation post (optional). Allowing other session participants to follow general presentations as well as the sessions performed by other drivers. If the observation post is not included in the offer, the system should be able to integrate it in the future without requiring changes in the simulator.

2. Driver’s station

It includes the following components:

  • Vehicle equipment
  • Driving seat
  • Visual system
  • Audio system
  • Recording system to follow driver’s behavior (optional)

2.1. Vehicle equipment

The driving equipment replicates the ergonomics of a real driving seat in a truck or a coach. The seat, the steering wheel, the pedals, the brakes and other devices are those of a real vehicle.

All the driving equipment is fitted with the relevant instruments (key, switches, engine brakes, pedals, gear lever, parking brake, steering wheel…) and connected to the simulator computer.

The virtual dashboard on the LCD display includes the rev counter and a variety of indicator lights and gauges providing warnings. According to the selected vehicle configuration, the visual system adapts to the vehicle (a truck or a coach).

Optionally, a second screen to the right of the steering wheel should display additional information, such as the tachograph, the buttons for adjusting the mirrors, or the warning buttons indicating that doors are opened (for a

coach).

It should be possible to choose among the following configurations of the gearbox:

-           8 gear manual gearbox (with a switch for slow/fast range).

-           6 gear manual gearbox.

-           Automatic gearbox.

2.2 Driving seat and dynamic platform

The driving seat and the steering column should be adjustable, as in a real vehicle.

The dynamic platform is expected to provide at least 3 degrees of freedom, in order to replicate the following movements with reasonable realism: rolling or tilting left and right; pitching, or tilting back and forth, and vertical shifting. The maximum load capacity should be at least 150 kg.

2.3. Audiovisual system

The images are displayed on three 55” LCD screens, with an average eye-to-screen distance of 150 cm, and a field of vision of 180°x45°. The rear-view should be embedded in the visual display.

The simulator should be able to reproduce the sounds of the vehicle and its environment (horn, blinking lights, engine, weather, traffic…). The sounds are stored on the computer hard drive and should be reproduced using either a multimedia speaker system or a headphone set.

2.4. Input devices

Optionally, the simulator could be equipped with devices allowing the driver or the trainer to input information, such as a keyboard with touchpad, a touch screen or a touch tablet. This will allow the selection of options within menus.

3. Trainer’s post

3.1. Hardware components

The trainer should be able to follow the session from an ergonomic working post (seat and table), and to introduce the necessary changes and interaction with the driver. Ideally, this should be made in a dedicated post equipped with mouse, keyboard, printer, and 24” screen. Oher options, such as a wireless touch tablet could also be considered.

3.2. Trainer’s options

The trainer should be allowed to perform the following actions:

-           Design of training exercises, in accordance with the training objectives (a set of at least 10 standard exercises should be included, with different conditions: urban and interurban driving, night and day driving, motorway and all-purpose roads, risk-awareness (focus on accident-avoidance)…). All the standard exercises should provide opportunities to focus the training on eco-driving aspects.

-           Starting and monitoring the training exercise as they are completed by the driver.

-           To interact in real time with the training exercise, changing parameters such as weather, traffic conditions, vehicle faults, and introducing and controlling (speed, braking and acceleration, change of lanes…) additional vehicles.

Recording and review of training exercises.

-           Input on training results, to be integrated with the reports automatically produced by the system at the end of each training session (with a focus on fuel consumption and its main drivers: accelerations, gear changes…).

The offer may include the adaptation of the training exercises to local conditions (signalization, landscape, etc). The offer should include a description of the visual components that will be adapted.

The design of training exercises by the trainer will include:

-           Vehicle characteristics: model (among a set of at least 4 trucks and 4 coaches), tyre conditions, loading conditions.

-           Route: starting and ending point and chosen route, average traffic conditions along the route.

-           Weather and light conditions.

-           Variations and incidents along the route: weather changes, vehicle faults, traffic incidents…

The exercise will be recorded by the system, including detailed fuel consumption data; critical driving mistakes will be automatically detected and identified on a final exercise report.

4. Observation post (optional)

The observation post will consist of a screen connected to the simulator, providing the same images of any of the screens available to the trainer. It could also be used to review recordings or to make presentations on theoretical aspects of eco-driving.

5. Installation requirements

The installation of the simulator should not require a costly adaptation of the selected room, and its installation or movement to another room should be possible without special equipment. The installation will be made by the contractor.

All hardware components will be placed in a dedicated rack, minimizing the number of wires and connectors in the training room, and adequately fixing and protecting them.

6. Capacity building

The contractor will provide the following materials and services:

-           General instructions for installing and removing the simulator.

-           User’s manual for the training post.

-           Operation and maintenance manual.

-           System administrator’s manual.

-           Part list.

The following training and capacity building activities will also be provided after installation, with a duration of at least 30 hours:

-           Training course addressed to future trainers (up to 8 persons).

-           Training course addressed to maintenance personnel in charge of the hardware3 and software components of the simulator (up to 3 persons).
