Overview :

The Government of Malawi, through the Environmental Affairs Department (EAD) in the Ministry of Natural Resources Energy and Mining with support from Global Environment Facility (GEF)-Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing a project to support implementation of a climate resilience project namely ‘Climate Proofing Local Development Gains in Rural and Urban Areas of Machinga and Mangochi Districts.’ In Mangochi, the project targets three Traditional Authorities (TA) (Nankumba, Chimwala, and Mponda).

As one way of promoting rain water harvesting in response to the current drought and inconsistent rainfall pattern the country is facing, Mangochi District Council plans to develop a dam to be used mainly for irrigation, water supply and flood control for the benefit of local communities.  The dam is proposed to be constructed on Mtemankhokwe River. The GPS Coordinates for the proposed dam site are 36L 0722 406. 8394 827. It is approximately 30km from Mangochi Boma in the area of GVH Stambuli, TA Mponda, near Katema Trading Centre.

In view of this, the Council intends to engage the services of a Consultant to carry out extensive feasibility study including field assessment, associated preliminary survey and design works. The feasibility study and construction works will be funded by GEF-LDCF through UNDP Country Office under Climate Proofing Project, a project being implemented in Mangochi and Machinga Districts.
