Overview : UNDP with funding from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) is supporting the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India in determining the national needs and requirements for ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury by undertaking a Mercury Initial Assessment (MIA). The assessment encompasses conducting a national inventory of various sources of mercury in the country. The project activities will focus on strengthening India’s capacity to manage and monitor mercury use, import, export, stockpiles, emissions, and releases throughout the. The expected outcomes of the project will be a description of the following: (a) National mercury profile, including an inventory of significant sources of emissions and releases, as well as inventories stocks of of mercury and mercury compounds; (b) Structures, institutions, legislation already available to implement the Convention; (c) Barriers that would hinder or prevent implementation; and, (d) Technical and financial needs for implementation of the Convention, including resources from GEF, national sources, bilateral sources, the private sector, and others.
