Overview :

The South African government through the Department of Energy in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing the appliance energy efficiency Standards and Labelling (S&L) Project. The project is designed with the objective of removing inefficient appliances from the South African market and to encourage the adoption of new minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for energy efficient appliances. The project forms an integral part of the measures / interventions designed to reduce electricity consumption and the carbon footprint of the residential sector.

UNDP and the Department of Energy is looking for a MArket Research Company to collect and report monthly lighting (lamp) sales data for South African retailers with specific focus on all A60 style lamps (i.e. incandescent or GLS, halogen, LED and CFLs bulbs) and downlighters. Retailer sales data is of interest as these points of sale are generally considered representative of the residential market/sector.

Data is required to cover the following:

  1. Types of lamp e.g. LED, halogen, CFL, GLS/incandescent

  2. Total market in sales and value

  3. Power consumption
  4. Average selling price

  5. Breakdown of sales per region

  6. Breakdown of sales per channel

  7. Period from 2015 to 2017 (historic)

  8. 2018 (monthly data, reported at six month intervals i.e. two reports required during 2018)
