Overview : The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat plays an important role in providing technical assistance in the areas of urban basic services such solid waste management and water & sanitation, disaster risk reduction and rehabilitation, urban legislation, land and governance, urban planning and design, housing and slum upgrading, urban economy, and research and capacity building for change management of urban areas, to partner governments at both central and local levels.. With rapid urbanization and population increase, solid waste management has become a pressing issue for Ethiopia, in the capital city of Addis Ababa and city of Bahir Dar, among others. |
