Background

Following the expiry of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015, the United Nations in collaboration with Heads of States and Governments of the 193 Member Nations, launched a new global development blueprint, Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. This development agenda comprises of 17 SDGs which are accompanied by 169 targets and 232 indicators. Malawi being one of the countries that ratified and adopted the Agenda for implementation in September 2015, has a commitment to implement and regularly report on the progress and achievements of the SDGs up to 2030 as part and parcel to its medium-term and long-term development agenda. To this end, the country recently domesticated the SDGs in its National Development Plan, the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy 2017-2022 (MGDSIII) to facilitate implementation, monitoring, and reporting on the SDGs.

The Agenda 2030 recognizes that a country-led strong inclusive and participatory review process is fundamental in achieving the ambitious agenda and therefore, includes a strong integrated follow-up and review framework covering national, regional and global levels. The national SDG review and follow up processes will be guided by the following principles:

  • Voluntary and country-led

  • Focused on universal goals and targets, including means of implementation

  • Long-term orientation

  • Open, inclusive, participatory and transparent

  • People- centred, gender sensitive and respectful of human rights

  • Built on existing platforms, processes and methodologies

  • Rigorous and evidence-based
