Overview : Setting-up of Youth Resource Centre (YRC) in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh; Nuapada, Odisha; and Ernakulam, Kerala (RFP/048/IND-2018, Event ID#000002653) United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYAS), Government of India have been implementing the project, “Strengthening Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and National Service Scheme (NSS)” to galvanize participation of youth in volunteering and youth development. The project is being implemented in 29 pilot districts of the country with the overall objective to provide catalytic support to the Youth Volunteer Schemes of the MoYAS and facilitate greater civic engagement of youth and participation in developmental activities. Youth Resource Centre NYKS is mandated to work for youth empowerment and community development in the country. NYKS channelizes the power of youth through volunteerism, self-help and community participation. Over the years, NYKS has established a network of youth clubs in rural areas to render community support through developmental initiatives involving activities with focus on youth empowerment. It has often been noticed that rural youth have limited information and exposure to different job roles, scholarship options, skilling & training avenues, higher education opportunities etc. One of the key interventions proposed under the project ‘Strengthening NYKS and NSS’, is to strengthen the capacity of rural youth clubs for increasing and diversifying the opportunities for youth volunteers to participate in the development process. In this regard, Youth Resource Centre (YRC) has been conceptualized to serve as an Information and Learning Hub for the youths from the community. YRC will provide learning opportunities for youth by introducing life skills, soft skills, vocational skills in parallel with the career counselling etc. It will also provide them with a platform to share and exchange youth-related experiences in a more structured way which will not only empower them but will also contribute significantly to the social, economic development and nation building. It is proposed to set up YRC at NYKS in three districts on pilot basis at Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh; Nuapada, Odisha; and Ernakulam, Kerala.
