Overview :

Across the world, women are poorly represented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education and in the ICT sector - in technical roles, decision-making positions and in digital entrepreneurship. The Global Gender Gap Report (GGGR) 2017 notes that industries historically most affected by occupational gender imbalance include among others, the technology sector. The Report further notes that such industries are losing out and that the technology sector, is already experiencing significant talent bottlenecks. There is also the leaky pipeline issue -where the number of women in STEM falls continuously from secondary school to university level and to the ICT sector so that even when women do participate in the tech sector, evidence shows that their attrition rate is high. Research shows that the median proportion of females employed in the telecommunications and other ICT-related industries in Africa is about 30%. In Africa, only 9% of start-ups had women leaders, according to a 2016 study by Venture Capital for Africa. Further studies indicate that women generally have less access to financing and training on how to start a business than men. Most global venture capital investments go into the ICT and related sectors but here the evidence is that first, there are very few female venture capitalists, and second, women-run companies receive a dismal proportion of venture capital.
