| Overview : The National Registration Act (No. 13 of 2010) mandates the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to establish and maintain a national population register of citizens aged 16 and above. NRB in collaboration with development partners instituted a National Registration and Identification System (NRIS) project with the aim at strengthening the continuous, universal and compulsory registration system, in line with international obligations. The 9.7 millions of Malawian national IDs currently in circulation are compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and incorporate a chip where several applications that could be loaded on them. Recently, an e-payment taskforce, chaired by the Department of Economic Planning and Development, was created and endorsed UNDP to scope out the e-wallet functionality of the National ID as a means of introducing cost- and service-efficiencies for payment transfers across various programmes. The objective of this assignment is to conduct a feasibility assessment of the E- wallet functionality on the National IDs. |
