The overall purpose of UNDP’s support to a law aid clinic in Liberia is to provide legal aid services to citizens who cannot otherwise afford costs for legal advice. The legal aid clinics approach has also proven its effectiveness as a method of teaching the law in several countries. It places theory within the only context in which it is truly meaningful: the resolution of actual legal disputes. By advising clients with legal problems, students learn the substantive law and lawyering skills in the most realistic style and setting. The law clinic experience not only contributes to a better understanding of the law learned in the classroom, but also gives the graduates a significant advantage in the workplace over those whose legal education lacks such practical experience. To that end there is a need to have a framework and guidelines that clearly defines the composition, structure, management, and programmatic activities that students will engage in.
