Overview : In 2019, the UN Security Council adopted the first ever resolution on protection of persons with disabilities in crisis contexts. By the terms of resolution 2475 (2019), the 15-member council called upon all parties to armed conflict to allow and facilitate safe, timely and unimpeded humanitarian access to all people in need of assistance. There are a large number of countries and areas that are affected by conflict in the Arab States, and minority groups, including the disabled, tend to be left behind and have low access to aid services. To draw attention to their plight, the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS) is organizing, in New York, an awareness raising event on visual impairment titled “Dining in the Dark”. The objective of this event is to increase awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities and foster partnerships with member states from the Arab region, as well as other UN agencies, towards this important issue. |
