Introduction

Collection, Transportation & Temporary Storage of POPs Contaminated/Expired Chemicals in Schools.
Sri Lanka is Party to Stockholm and Minamata Conventions and, thus has international legal obligations to control, reduce, and eliminate the use of substances controlled by the above two conventions. Sri Lanka's chemical sector is undergoing rapid expansion, with a focus on importation and blending of chemicals for agricultural, industrial, and laboratory applications. 

In this context, the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and UNDP Sri Lanka, together with the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and Ministry of Education are implementing a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project on Integrated Management and Environmentally Sound Disposal of POPs Pesticides in the Agriculture Sector end Mercury and Waste in the Healthcare Sector in Sri Lanka.

As part of this broader effort, the primary objective of this assignment is to safely collect and transport chemicals from schools across eight provinces of Sri Lanka to a central location, where they will be stored in compliance with national and international standards until their final disposal in an environmentally sound manner.


The selected Service Provider will be responsible for the collection, transportation, and temporary storage of the chemicals in accordance with the National Environment Act, the Stockholm Convention guidelines, the Basel Convention regulations, and other relevant national regulations.
