Overview :

UNDP is a founding cosponsor of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), a partner of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and a co-sponsor of several other international health partnerships. UNDP’s work on HIV, health and development leverages the organization’s core strengths and mandates in human development, governance and capacity development to complement the efforts of specialist health-focused UN agencies.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons in the Caribbean region face legal, social, and economic barriers that result in their marginalization and prevent them from reaching their full development and realizing their most basic human rights.

“Being LGBTI in the Caribbean, BLIC” is a project implemented by UNDP in partnership with national stakeholders that seeks to improve knowledge and alliances, as well as to strengthen the capacities of LGBTI organizations, and States in the region in order to  address human rights violations, inequality and discrimination faced by LGBTI individuals in the Caribbean.

UNFE Campaign:

At the national and regional level, the BLIC project has partnered with the United Nations Free & Equal (UNFE) Campaign. The UN Free & Equal campaign is an initiative of the United Nations Human Rights Office against homophobia and transphobia, implemented with support from UN and non-UN partners at the country level.

Regional Dialogue:

The Regional Dialogue “Being LGBTI in the Caribbean” is one of the flagship activities of the “Being LGBTI in the Caribbean” project together with UNFE campaign, that will allow the sharing of good practices and policy initiatives that promote inclusion and respect for human rights in the region.

In this Dialogue, LGBTI activists will meet with technical and political members of the governments, private sector and academia to discuss key concerns that affect the LGBTI community, whether these are related to health and education or labour inclusion and access to justice.

The overall objective of this campaign is to achieve equal rights and fair treatment for LGBTI people in the Caribbean.
