1. BACKGROUND

UNDP provides support to Jordan to deliver global environmental benefits related to climate change through deepening the understanding of GHG emissions, sinks and its potential impacts, this is expected to contribute to strengthening the linkage of the national environmental management system with the global environment and enhance the national capacities to address and report on climate change effects. In this regard, the GEF-funded, UNDP- supported, Ministry of Environment-implemented “Fourth National Communication Report & Second Biennial Update Report to UNFCCC” project was commenced in 2019.

The project seeks to assist Jordan in the efforts of integrating climate change consideration into the national and development policies, continue to build on the institutional and technical capacity strengthening process in the areas of Climate Change and National Communications reporting. The project ultimate objective is to prepare and submit the 4th National Communication Report under the UNFCCC.

The UN-Habitat support in Jordan aims to better manage the accelerating urban sprawl and improve the preparedness to mitigate the detrimental impacts of climate change on the fragile physical, socio-economic, and environmental aspects of urban areas. In partnership with UNEP, UN-Habitat will implement the project “Inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable development in urban areas hosting Syrian refugees in Jordan and Turkey” which aims at strengthening capacities of local and national authorities to pursue inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable development in urban areas hosting Syrian refugees in Amman, Jordan. As part of the project, UN-Habitat intends to support the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) under C40 cities framework to define and map the climate hazards and its likely impacts, assess the adaptive capacity at city, district, and neighborhood levels to adapt to the changing climate.

In this context, UNDP, UN-Habitat and UNEP seek to synergize the efforts to undertake the climate change vulnerability assessment in the urban areas, downscale the analysis at Amman and Aqaba Cities, whilst define and map the climate hazards and its probable impacts.
