Overview :

In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The outbreak has infected millions of people across the world and caused significant loss of lives. The Government of Botswana in an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, has introduced a set of measures on prevention of COVID-19. One of the measures was the introduction of COVID-19 vaccine when it became available in 2021.Through the national vaccine deployment plan, the country has since managed to build partnerships that enabled access to vaccines through bilateral, multilateral procurement arrangements and donations. This was possible through commitment from the highest office in the country and relevant response structures with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and beyond. The availability of vaccines was equally complemented by robust demand creation efforts through the national risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) group and development partners, as well as implementing partners. As a result of the many efforts, Botswana is one of the leading countries in Africa that has surpassed the WHO set target of 40% coverage for Covid-19 vaccines by the end of 2021. This extraordinary success has seen the country trail on a journey never experienced before, a journey that tested the country’s public health response capabilities to the limit. Be that as it may, Botswana has so far conquered and in the process so many inspiring narratives, achievements and lessons have emerged that need to be told through the events that touched all sections of the society, hence the need to document the journey for learning purposes and inspiring further commitment to end COVID-19.The documentary will provide insights into how the country battled the Covid-19 pandemic when it first emerged and further implemented a successful covid 19 vaccine plan which surpassed WHO set target. Furthermore, the story will highlight lessons that other countries can draw from Botswana’s journey
