Overview :

UNDP Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam is seeking qualified organisations to submit a Concept Proposal for the Sustainable Tourism Recovery (Sustainable Tourism) project to be implemented between October 2022 and 2023. The Sustainable Tourism project is designed to address several endogenous and exogenous challenges affecting the tourism industry in three specific geographical areas of Malaysia (Mersing, Setiu and Manjung). However, it is primarily centred around the government's ambition to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the domestic tourism sector by focusing on building the resilience of destination communities and MSME businesses. At the same time, the opportunity is also taken to encourage the desired transformation towards more environmentally and inclusive tourism as advocated in its national ecotourism plan (2016-2025) and the latest National Tourism Policy (2020-2030).

During the Budget 2022, the Minister of Finance announced, under Initiative 3: Community Empowerment, Item 224, that the Government supports “the United Nations Development Programme on their efforts in conducting various initiatives such as creating safe tourism and restoration activities in Mersing, Johor and Manjung, Perak”, of which RM5.7 million will be allocated for tourism efforts.

Between March and June 2022, UNDP conducted consultation process with local authorities and stakeholders at each destination to unpack and verify the needs of the locals. The consultations highlighted untapped potential and opportunities but also the lack of capacity and understanding at the local level to implement sustainable tourism recovery.  Therefore, UNDP is inviting all organisations that meet the criteria below to take the opportunity to submit the concept proposal for the Sustainable Tourism project to be implemented in the destinations as stipulated above.
