Overview : Introduction SSAFE In the year 2015, a total of 20 SSAFE trainings have been planned. SSAFE training is mandatory for all UN staff travelling or based in Somalia. The demand for the training is high and the maximum capacity of participants per training is 40. The projected number of staff to be trained in Nairobi is 800. A total of 3,200 participants have been trained in the past 118 SSAFE – SOM trainings starting from February 2008 to December 2013, averaging 30 participants in the first four pilot modules and 36 to 40 on the consequent trainings. There were 184 participants from the INGO/NGO/Donor Community. Emergency Trauma bag Training (ETB) was introduced in the year 2009. Its main objective is to train the participants on proper first aid responder care using the life saving tools and supplies readily available inside an emergency trauma bag. So far 30 ETB trainings have been conducted and 300 participants trained. It is a five day course whereby one day is set aside for practical exercises. The Module – 3 one day refresher training was introduced in 2010. The first and only pilot training was conducted on 9th December, 2010 were 5 participants were trained. This is a one-day refresher training with a mix of theory and practical contents. The objectives of this course is to update existing knowledge, skills and awareness of the participants who have received similar trainings in the past so as to qualify them as meeting the criteria of the Security Training Requirement of UN Somalia as approved by the Somalia Management Team (SMT). Due to the mandatory nature of training, SMT approved that until a ‘donor funding’ is availed, SSAFE/ETB/Module-3 Refresher training will continue with the provision of ‘agency cost shared mechanism’ where individual agencies will be billed depending on the number of participants who have attended the training. Objective The overall objective of this project is to provide pre – deployment training to all UN staff and INGOs working inside Somalia. This equips the staff with improved ability to work safely and securely in a highly volatile environment inside Somalia.
