The UNDP project ‘Support to the electoral cycle in Jordan’, is primarily funded by the European Union, and consists of technical and material electoral assistance. The project is designed to enhance the institutional and professional capacities of the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) established in 2012. The objective is to assist the IEC to deliver its mandated functions of conducting credible and transparent elections and consolidate itself as a permanent, professional, credible and independent institution of governance, with the benefits of its work enjoyed equally by men and women.

The IEC has an established Media and Outreach Unit that successfully delivered public awareness and voter information activities during the 2013 parliamentary elections, including multi-media campaigns and a media center. In January 2015, the IEC adopted a Public Awareness Framework that covers a strategic approach to its role in providing voter information, voter education and civic education for the period 2015-2017, during which time it is envisaged that parliamentary, municipal and governorate council elections will be held under new legislative frameworks. In addition, the IEC is expected to develop the liaison with various media and external outreach that it helps the IEC to engage with voters, and other stakeholders on the performance of its role and responsibilities, and the delivery of its activities.

UNDP seeks to deploy a National Media Coordinator to advise on areas related to the role of media in voter education and external outreach, to liaise on electoral management matters with media within the Kingdom, and to help the IEC engage effectively with voters and other stakeholders within the scope of the IEC communications strategy.
