Overview : The protected Areas (PA) system in St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) is currently consist three (3) terrestrial PA units on the island of St. Kitts. The Central Forest Reserve National Park (CFRNP) was established primarily for ecological and conservation purposes; the Brimstone Hill National Fortress for historical and cultural preservation; and the Royal Basseterre Valley for water conservation. There are no terrestrial protected areas on the island of Nevis and there are no marine protected areas in the Federation. In addition, apart from Brimstone Hill National Fortress, there is no active management of protected areas in the country at either the system or site level. This project will (a) improve ecosystem representation in the PA system; (b) establish/strengthen PA management operations at key sites; and, (c) strengthen institutional, policy, legal/regulatory, information, and financing frameworks at the PA system level. |
