| Overview : Regional and Country Level Training Workshops on Geo-data Digitization and Mapping of Development Minerals 2017 – 2018 REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS – SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS1 Application deadlines for each workshop, See Page 4 Programme Background The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme is a €13.1 million capacity building program to support knowledge exchange across Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific. The Programme is an initiative of African, Caribbean Pacific (ACP) Group of States, coordinated by the ACP Secretariat, financed by the European Union and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and implemented by UNDP. The Programme is implemented at both the regional and country levels. At the regional level, the Programme conducts capacity building activities for forty ACP countries through regional training workshops, guidance products and knowledge exchange. At the country level, in depth capacity building is undertaken with six focus countries,2 with activities including training, small grants, the production of maps and databases, development of regulations on environment and safety, organization of community dialogues, technology fairs and networking events etc. From toothpaste to paints, and buildings to plates, the mining of Development Minerals are intrinsic to everyday life. But despite their potential to impact the livelihoods of millions of people, these minerals have been neglected in development debates. 'Development Minerals' are minerals and materials that are mined, processed, manufactured and used domestically in industries such as construction, manufacturing, infrastructure and agriculture. Development Minerals are economically important close to the location where the commodity is mined and include industrial minerals, like gypsum and salt, construction materials, like sand and gravel, dimension stones, like marble and granite, and semi-precious stones, like garnet and tourmaline. By nurturing home-grown jobs, especially those of youth and women, boosting local manufacturing and enterprise development and improving access to publicly available geodata, the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme seeks to support ACP countries to reclaim the minerals and materials essential for domestic economic development. Training Rationale and Aims The Development Minerals sector commonly operates with a lack of publicly available and easily accessible geological data which inhibits informed decision making for businesses, development planning, permitting, urbanization and even disaster management. Efforts to improve geological information and mapping in the mining sector have tended to prioritise so-called high value minerals (metals) and many countries do not hold comprehensive mineral occurrence data, maps or information of reserves for Development Minerals. Addressing these and other challenges will require coordinated action at local, national, sub-regional and regional levels. The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme is delivering a series of regional and country level training workshops on geological data digitization techniques, field mapping, resource estimation and database management of Development Minerals. The proposed series of workshops will consist of regional training workshops for East Africa, West Africa (French-speaking and English-speaking), Central Africa, Southern Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific and country-level training workshops for Zambia, Cameroon, Uganda, Guinea-Conakry, Jamaica and Fiji. The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme is partnering with the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC), CARICOM and The Pacific Community, in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, respectively, to co-host the events. This workshop series on Geo-data Digitization and Mapping of Development Minerals aims to improve skills and reduce data deficiencies on Development Minerals. Specifically, the training will: - • Familiarize trainees with mapping, digitization and reserve estimation software.
- • Improve geo-data mapping, digitization, database management and field mapping skills
- • Catalyze the collection of geological data and the development or enhancement of geological inventories of Development Minerals.
- • Improve the public availability of geological data for potential investors in the Development Minerals sector.
- • Encourage south-to-south knowledge exchange and the replication of the training through a training of trainer style approach.
- • Support the implementation of the acquired skills through Return-to-Work Plans for each participating country that will aim to develop or enhance a country level geo-data inventory.
WORKSHOP OUTLINE Title | Regional and Country Level Training Workshops on Geo-data Digitization and Mapping of Development Minerals | Summary | The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme is undertaking a series of Regional and Country-level Training Workshops on Geo-Data Digitization and Mapping of Development Minerals with each held over a period of 12 days (including a 2-day field visit). The workshops will to improve skills and support the development of Geo-data inventories of Development Minerals. The workshops will be delivered throughout 2017 and 2018 and attended by sector professionals involved in geo-data mapping, digitization, database management and field mapping. Between 3-6 professionals will be competitively selected from each participating country to attend the training. Sponsorship will be provided to nationals of the participating countries of the Programme. Sponsorship will include travel, accommodation and daily subsistence (travel and health insurance is the responsibility of the selected candidate). | Target Audience | Participants from the following professions are eligible to apply: - • Geological and cadastral institutes

Women are highly encouraged to apply. | Objectives | The objectives of the workshops are as follows: - • Increase knowledge about Development Minerals and their role in sustainable development.
- • Familiarize participants with mapping, digitization and reserve estimation software.
- • Improve geo-data mapping, digitization, database management and field mapping skills.
- • Improve the public availability of geological data for potential investors in the Development Minerals sector.
- • Encourage south-to-south knowledge exchange and the replication of the training through a training of trainer style approach.

| Deliverables | Each participant is expected to: - • Collate and bring to the training available geo data on Development Minerals (raw, aggregated or disaggregated).
- • Attend each day of the workshop days in full.
- • Finalize and periodically prepare a progress report on the implementation of the RWP (the reporting schedule will be determined based on the content of the plan).
Please note: satisfactory completion of these tasks is a condition of acceptance of the sponsorship to attend the training and for future involvement in programme activities. | Selection Criteria | - • Professionals with at least 5-years of experience in geo-data mapping, digitization, database management and field mapping skills, preferably with experience of Development Minerals.
- • Demonstrated knowledge of mapping, digitization and reserve estimation software.
- • Familiarity with small scale mining and quarrying issues including mining sector policy and international standards/industry best practices.
- • Currently employed by a relevant organization with a demonstrated willingness/pledge to undertake the collection of geological data and the development or enhancement of geological inventories of Development Minerals in your home country.
