  1. BACKGROUND

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

This initiative translates to the Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls Global Programme, currently implemented in 22 cities, to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls (SVAWG) in public spaces.

The Programmes engages a comprehensive and holistic set of strategies to high rates of violence against women and girls, including policy advocacy, capacity development, gender-responsive urban planning and engaging with communities to change social norms. Part of the strategy is to engage with media personnel to enhance awareness of journalists and presenters to the various dimensions around the reporting of stories on gender-based violence.
