Overview :

United Republic of Tanzania (URT) joined the international community and over 150 world leaders during the 70th UN General Assembly (UNGA), held on 25th September 2015, where the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs was adopted. The 17 goals, 169 targets and 231 indicators of SDGs integrate the three dimensions of sustainability; the social, the economic and the environmental.

In addition, the development agenda places a strong emphasis on leaving no one behind and poverty eradication; forging a new global partnership based on the spirit of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual accountability; placing people at the center of development and striving for a world that is just, equitable and inclusive, and promote sustained and inclusive economic growth; and take action on climate change and environment among others.

In this context, The UNDP in Tanzania is implementing a project to support establishment and consolidation of a local chapter of the UN Global Compact in Tanzania, aiming to encourage the adoption of socially responsible practices in Tanzania.

Global Compact Network Tanzania plays a role to raise awareness of businesses and non-businesses on the benefits of operating in a responsible way, adhering and reporting on the Ten UN global compact principles while advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Recognition of the key role played by private sector has been increasingly acknowledged by public policy makers and a range of initiatives, policies and policy frameworks at both the local and national level.

Contributing to the growth and development of the private sector has both important economic and social impacts. Both formal and informal businesses have a critical role to play in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their contributions are particularly strong in financing, employment creation, providing significant opportunities for populations in country.

In July 2019, the URT will submit its first Voluntary National Review (VNR) on Tanzania’s progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the UN’s High-Level Political Forum in New York.

The VNR provides an opportunity to highlight Tanzanians achievements, priorities and challenges both domestically and internationally in advancing the 2030 Agenda.

So how can we ensure that business’ involvement in the SDGs on the ground becomes an integral part of the follow-up and review mechanism? a key question is how we can best tell our stories of SDG impact, both individually and collectively.

The solution is data. Simply put, what gets measured gets managed, so it is important to draw on private sector SDG-related data.

To make such data available, Global Compact Network Tanzania with support of UNDP plan to develop voluntary national online web portal for private sector entities to register their sustainability information, as called for in SDG target 12.6. Information disclosed through corporate sustainability reporting which can be used to assess business contribution and impacts on sustainable development, and thus, the SDGs.

The primary aim of this website is to provide Tanzania with a live centralized online platform to  showcase action being taken across government, business, civil society and academia in advancing the SDGs in the Tanzanian context.

As an important process for the private sector to provide inputs to the VNR at the HLPF 2019, UNDP through its support to  the establishment and consolidation UN Global Compact Network Tanzania, wishes to recruit national a firm to support development of user-friendly and interactive Tanzania sustainability web portal.
