Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly increased infectious healthcare waste in waste stream and is overwhelming waste treatment facilities, which have been facing with limited public and private investments in sustainable waste treatment systems, now find themselves in the dire situation of mounting infectious healthcare wastes flooding existing waste management capacity, with limited capacity to handle the different types of hazardous waste. Improperly managed healthcare waste is recognized as a significant source of pollutants that adversely affect human health and the environment.

The objective of this project is to support national governments, health agencies and stakeholders involved in the Health Care Waste Management in three countries in Southwest Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives, with consistent gender responsive guidance, to deploy locally appropriate health care waste management practices and technologies and improve capacity of healthcare institutions to help address both infectious and non-infectious healthcare challenges during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic to protect human health and help minimize the  pandemic's environmental and social impacts.

In the Maldives, as with other countries, issues arose with COVID-19, one of which is the excessive production of medical waste. This project aims to address the development challenges of inadequate HCWM processes and techniques and thereby increase such capacities in health care centers in Maldives.

This project expects to directly benefit healthcare workers and patients by reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and other diseases by providing a safe way to sanitize medical waste. It is a key assumption that the proposed project will ensure that regions and atolls not covered by already ongoing efforts will be the project’s target regions, thereby eliminating possibilities for duplication.
