Introduction

Conduct Training programs for Provincial Journalists  in Sri Lanka.

The project “Countering hate speech through education and advocacy for improving social cohesion in Sri Lanka” aims to strengthen social cohesion through building safer and more inclusive spaces (online and offline) by supporting national partners in addressing the emerging issue of online hate speech. By delivering real-time data, providing support for effective advocacy, developing capacities for generating responses to hate speech narratives, and improving digital literacy, the project takes a multi-dimensional approach –addressing drivers that emerge both online and offline. It seeks to advance more systematic monitoring and timely analysis of the spread of hate speech in the country complemented by cutting-edge and gender-sensitive approaches to effectively respond to it with measurable impact on the ground.

OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF INTERVENTION

Based on insightful data obtained from a comprehensive needs assessment (which has already been completed), UNDP Sri Lanka is committed to partnering with an institution in collaboration with the ministry of mass media to implement an island wide capacity building program specifically designed for provincial journalists. This collaborative initiative aims to address the identified knowledge gaps and enhance the capabilities of journalists operating across various provinces of Sri Lanka. By tailoring the program to the unique needs of these media practitioners, considering diverse gender and ethnic backgrounds, the intention is to empower them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively navigate the challenges related to hate speech, misinformation, media ethics, human rights, and legal regulations governing their profession. The island wide capacity building program will serve as a catalyst for fostering responsible journalism and promoting a culture of inclusivity and respect in media practices throughout the country.

Scope

This training program has to be strategically crafted to address key subject areas and equip provincial journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to enhance their capacity, elevate the quality of their reporting, and foster professionalism in their journalistic endeavors. By empowering journalists through this tailored training, the ultimate goal is to foster a more informed and responsible media landscape across the selected provinces.

The training program will be conducted in an interactive manner, using adult training methodologies to avoid traditional training methods. This will include case studies, experience sharing and discussion platforms, ice breakers, and video-based discussions to create an engaging atmosphere during the training.

Please refer to the TOR for details.
