Introduction

Duty Station: Lagos, Nigeria

Description of the Assignment: IC Web & Content Designer

Period of assignment/services: 6 Months

1.   BACKGROUND

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country with an estimated population of 206 Million1 and an annual population growth rate of 2.6%2. 19% of her population is aged between 15-24. By 2050, Nigeria’s population is expected to have doubled, reaching more than 400 million and becoming the third largest country in the world.3 More than half of its population will be under the age of 30 years. While youth remain an asset for national development, their limited engagement in the labour market and rising unemployment is a key frontier challenge facing the country. Recent statistics from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicate that while over 50% of the labour force is comprised of youth, with 63% unemployed.

In response to this complex development challenge, the Federal Government with financial support from the European Union mandated the UNDP to lead the establishment and implementation of the Nigeria Jubilee Fellowship Programme – a flagship platform connecting outstanding fresh graduates to work opportunities through a through a twelve-month fully paid placement opportunity.

Through this programme, highly qualified recent graduates from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be provided with a unique work opportunity within Private Sector institutions, Government, UN Agencies, and Development Organizations with the intention of enhancing their professional and leadership capacities to meaningfully participate in the social and economic development prospects of their country. It is expected that this programme will also contribute towards improving the employability of the Fellows; help to kick start their careers in the international development and public sectors, while also transferring requisite skills and competences for those seeking to venture into entrepreneurial activities in the private sector. In so doing, the Fellowship will also assist in reversing the brain-drain problem and tack irregular emigration by making young professionals especially new graduates more competitive on the domestic labour market.

Over 3,000 fresh graduates onboarded and placed so far will be transitioning into an alumni network currently positioned as a talent hub that private and public sector entities can tap into. The alumni network is framed as a transformative space where offboarded fellows are further connected to opportunities – both on the labour and entrepreneurship market.

2.     ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT

The talent hub will foster active and meaningful engagement of NJFP alumni by providing valuable opportunities, resources, and a platform for networking, learning and collaboration. All of which will be enabled digitally. The hub will ensure seamless transitions for the alumni from education to workforce or entrepreneurial ventures, empowering them to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s social and economic development
