Introduction

Country:    Bangladesh

Description of the Assignment:

The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a unique ecosystem that supports a rich biodiversity and provides livelihoods for millions of people in the region. However, this area is under significant threat due to climate change, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic challenges. Climate change poses a severe threat to the Sundarbans, with rising sea levels, increased salinity, and extreme weather events impacting both the ecological balance and the livelihoods of local communities. The region has been identified as a climate hotspot, with climate change impacts exacerbating the vulnerability of the local communities, many of whom are dependent on the forest and its resources for their livelihoods.

Biodiversity loss is another critical issue in the Sundarbans. The region is home to many species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, the Ganges and Irrawaddy dolphins, and several species of birds, fish, and reptiles. However, habitat degradation, pollution, overfishing, and illegal hunting are leading to a declining trends in flora and fauna and affecting the biodiversity of the Sundarbans and adjacent areas. Socio-economic challenges further compound these environmental issues. Poverty, lack of alternative livelihood options, limited access to basic services, and social inequalities are prevalent in the Sundarbans communities. These challenges often drive unsustainable practices, such as overexploitation of forest resources, and increase the communities' vulnerability to climate change impacts.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh, focusing on the Sundarbans region to develop an area-based programme to better protect the biodiversity and ecosystems while supporting the climate vulnerable communities to adapt with the adverse impact of climate change and enhance their resilience. In this context, UNDP Bangladesh is seeking the services of a National Consultant (Climate Change and Biodiversity Expert) to design an area-based programme in the Sundarbans region. The consultant's work will contribute to the SABP's overarching goal of achieving sustainable development in the Sundarbans region, ensuring the protection of its unique ecosystem, and enhancing the resilience and well-being of its communities.
