Specifications for ONE UN LTA For Supply of Drinking Water in Liberia:

Water is essential to sustain life, and a satisfactory (adequate, safe and accessible) supply must be available to all. Improving access to safe drinking-water can result in tangible benefits to health. Every effort should be made to achieve a drinking-water quality as safe as practicable.


The below represents guidelines of the quality of water to be supplied to the UN Agencies in Liberia.

1. Disinfection is of absolute importance in the supply of safe drinking-water. The destruction of microbial pathogens is essential and very commonly involves the use of reactive chemical agents such as chlorine.


2. Chlorine can be easily monitored and controlled as a drinking-water disinfectant and frequent monitoring is recommended wherever chlorination is practiced.

3. Water should be free of tastes and odours that would be unacceptable to most consumers.

4. Composition of the water should be comprise of calcium, magnesium, potassium, Bicarbonate, Sulfates, Chlorates, Nitrates and Fluoresce which are chemicals which must be in Drinking-water.

5. Pretreatment, coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection must be carried out on a weekly basis. Pretreatment includes processes such as roughing filters, micro strainers, off-stream storage and bankside filtration. Pretreatment options may be compatible with a variety of treatment processes ranging in complexity from simple disinfection to membrane processes.

Pretreatment can reduce and/or stabilize the microbial, natural organic matter and particulate load. Coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation or flotation


1. Description of treatment and operation procedures:

Supply of drinking water to the One UN House in Liberia shall be based on the regulations of the Government of Liberia, by and through

the Ministry of Health and Environmental Protection Agency based on their certifications.

Insurance, Manpower & Fuel Cost should be factored into costing.

Company must have accreditation, certification from the LWSC/EPA/Ministry of Health for such transactions.

Description of location and characteristics of the source of water to be treated and/or distributed.

Description of available facilities to perform the required tasks such as treatment equipment, washing and filling of bottles and

delivery fleet.


Description of water purifying methodologies either is done by the same vendor or outsourced.

The minimum procedures required should be the following:

• Filtration system

• Reverse osmosis

• Disinfection

2. Operational experience: Number of years of continuous operation in the supply of purified drinking water. Should be a minimum of 5 years.


3. Operational procedures

The vendor must be able to supply full jars and collect empty jars at least 2 times a week a total of 150 water Jars Monday, and Thursday before 02:30 pm from the One UN House.
