Vocational Training in AfCFTA Compliant Bag-Making and Shoe-Making for Export Readiness

Type of consultancy:

National (Nigerian)

Naira

Duration:

4 Months

BACKGROUND

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the lifeblood of Nigeria's economy, accounting for over 90% of all businesses and contributing approximately 48% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With over 41.5 million MSMEs operating across various sectors, this segment is crucial for job creation, economic diversification, and poverty alleviation. In particular, the fashion and leather goods industry, which includes bag and shoe making, offers a significant opportunity for economic growth and youth empowerment. Despite the potential, this sector faces several challenges, including a shortage of skilled labor, limited access to quality vocational training, and insufficient entrepreneurial capabilities among young people.

By addressing the skills gap in the fashion and leather goods sector, we can empower young people to become entrepreneurs, driving both employment and innovation. The potential market for fashion goods in Nigeria is vast, with the industry valued at approximately $4.7 billion, making it one of the fastest-growing segments within the broader creative economy. However, the sector's growth is stymied by the lack of structured training programs that combine technical expertise with entrepreneurial skills.

This vocational training program aims to equip 100 participants with the necessary skills to excel in the bag and shoe-making industry. By providing technical training in design, construction, and finishing techniques, as well as business management skills, the program will empower participants to start and grow their own MSMEs. This initiative directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), which seeks to promote sustained, inclusive economic growth and productive employment, and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), which focuses on building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation.

By building the capacity of young entrepreneurs in the fashion and leather goods sector, this program will contribute to reducing youth unemployment, fostering economic growth, and creating sustainable livelihoods. It aligns with Nigeria’s national development goals and the broader global agenda of promoting economic resilience and inclusivity through targeted interventions in high-potential sectors.
