Introduction

Country:   Philippines

Description of the Assignment:

The project aims to support the development of national action plan in key sectors (such as tourism) that contribute to plastic pollution, foster innovative solutions, and raise awareness for policy coordination and behaviour change to end plastic pollution.

Specifically, the project seeks to support the implementation of an integrated approach to plastic management to address plastic pollution at its source: 1) eliminate non-essential plastics, particularly single use plastics; 2) innovate to promote technical and business solutions including refill, reuse and ecological alternatives; 3) circulate existing plastics in the economy to reduce demand for virgin plastics; and 4) improve waste management to stop plastic waste leakage into the environment.

Under this project, the Philippines was selected as a case country for a sectoral baseline assessment on plastic use and pollution from the tourism to identify the needs, and develop pathways to promote plastics-free and carbon neutral tourism.

The tourism sector in the Philippines is a significant contributor to the national economy. However, it also generates substantial plastic waste, particularly from Single-Use Plastics (SUPs), which poses a significant environmental challenge. To address this issue, a comprehensive sectoral analysis of plastic consumption and pollution within the tourism sector is required. This analysis will inform policy-making and identify best practices for reducing plastic waste.
