Introduction
UNDP Nepal has been supporting Ministry of Forest and Environment to make the protected area management plan preparation guideline more climate responsive to address the impacts of climate change and protect the livehood of vulnerable communities. UNDP recently joined hands with Department of National Park and Wildlife conservation to support renewal of the management plan of some of the protected areas as well as perform its Initial Environmental Examination. With regard to this, UNDP is now providing technical support to Department of National Park and wildlife conservation (DNPWC) to renew the management plan of Makalu Barun National Park and its buffer zone (MBNP). To facilate the plan preparation process, a task force has been formed under the leadership of the chief warden of Makalu Barun National Park to initiate the revision process for the management plan of MBNP. UNDP will be providing technical support to MBNP through DNPWC.
The management plan will be prepared using a scientific and participatory approach that takes into account climate change and disaster risk management. The objective is to enhance the biodiversity of the park, promote tourism while maintaining a delicate balance between conservation and tourism, support local communities’ livelihoods through effective management of natural and cultural heritages, and provide a brief framework for climate-induced disaster risk management. It will be prepared using "Protected Area Management plan preparation procedure" (2073) and adopt "Protected Area Management Strategy of Nepal" (2022 - 2030) and adopt climate-resilient and adaptive management as guiding principles for designing interventions based on climate risks and vulnerabilities.
In this regard, UNDP Nepal is looking for a consultancy firm to support DNPWC to renew the management plan of Makalu Barun National Park integrating the climate risk and hazard information into planning and development. The firm will closely work
