Introduction
The FUNGUO programme is committed to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Tanzania through an integrated approach aimed at nurturing impact-driven startups and innovative Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). By strategically addressing obstacles within the innovation ecosystem, FUNGUO seeks to create an empowering environment for innovators and entrepreneurs. The program's theory of impact posits that supporting and scaling startups and innovative MSMEs will not only generate jobs, particularly for women and youth, but also enhance income, leading to quality livelihoods and fostering sustainable and inclusive development.
Co-funded by the European Union (through the BEGIN Programme), the British Government (through the Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships, ATIP) and UNDP (United Nations Development Program), FUNGUO is implemented by UNDP Tanzania in collaboration with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). This collaborative and multi-stakeholder approach ensures a comprehensive and impactful intervention in Tanzania's innovation ecosystem. Working closely with the Tanzanian Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH) and other government agencies, FUNGUO aims to make a significant contribution to the country's sustainable development goals by fostering a supportive environment for startups and innovative MSMEs.
FUNGUO has so far launched two calls for funding with significant impact. In June 2022, the First Call for Funding resulted in 26 dynamic startups with over TZS 2.6 billion in catalytic funding. This cohort raised an additional TZS 1.28 billion, generating about 3,400 direct and indirect jobs. The Second Call for Funding in May 2023 continued this momentum, adding another TZS 1.2 billion to FUNGUO’s catalytic funding pool, bringing the total commitment to TZS 3.8 billion, fully funded by the EU. Notably, 45% of applications were from women-led or women-founded businesses, covering vital sectors such as agriculture, energy, fisheries, healthcare, education, and technology-driven solutions.
Encouraged by the above results and wishing to mobilize partnerships to leverage FUNGUO’s catalytic funding, UNDP is partnering with CRDB Bank Foundation in designing and launching the 3rd Call for Funding. Through this third funding round, FUNGUO seeks to support eligible startups and innovative SMEs with a clear path to scale and leverage its grant funding to open doors for more financing to successful ventures. The focus is on ventures that can already demonstrate some market traction, and how the catalytic funding received will unlock their potential to attract additional financing. This funding opportunity will give special consideration to women-led and women-founded businesses by allocating at 40% of the available budget to them.
FUNGUO is looking to effectively and efficiently showcase and disseminate its programmatic activities and achievements through extensive communications, photography, videography, digital media, and strategically curated events to ensure adequate visibility and engagement with the programme stakeholders.
To achieve this, UNDP, through the FUNGUO Innovation Programme is seeking to contract a communication, photography, videography, digital media, and event management firm to support the programme in this endeavor.
Interested firms are encouraged to submit bids related to Consulting Services for Communication, Photography, Videography, Digital Media, and Event Management Services
