Introduction

Supply and installation of hydroponic horticulture system - (Request for Proposal UNDP-RWA-00199)

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Rwanda is seeking a qualified and experienced firm/company to undertake the implementation of Hydroponic vertical farming at UN compound, Rwanda. UNDP plans to set up state-of-the-art vertical and urban farming demonstration site at UNDP to showcase the potential of these technologies in driving the future of the agriculture.

According to the Agriculture Strategic Plan, the government of Rwanda is committed to transforming the agricultural sector into a major driver of economic growth and poverty reduction amid climate change effects. To build resilience against climate change, Rwanda plans to promote climate-smart agricultural practices, including hydroponic farming. Urban and vertical farming technologies, such as hydroponics and greenhouse farming, offer innovative solutions by maximizing space utilization, reducing resource consumption, and increasing food production in urban areas. By integrating hydroponics into the agricultural sector, Rwanda could potentially achieve multiple objectives, including diversification of Agriculture, year-round production, and economic opportunities by stimulating the growth of agribusinesses and create employment opportunities within the agricultural value chain.

Hydroponic farming is therefore a more efficient and sustainable way to grow food than traditional agriculture, as it requires less land and water, which can be helpful in areas with limited land or water resources especially in urban areas. It is also a more climate-resilient way to grow food, as it is not as susceptible to drought or flooding and other climate change effects.
