Introduction
The scope of this assignment focuses on assessing the SME’s readiness to pursue ISO 22000 certification and improving its food safety management systems. This includes evaluating existing practices, conducting a cost-benefit analysis for obtaining the certification, and determining whether the SME is willing to go through the certification process, including annual audits. Key activities involve designing and implementing processes such as health and safety systems, creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for critical areas like production, supplier management, and transportation, and analyzing food safety risks with corresponding mitigation plans. Additionally, UNCDF will develop a plan for regular internal audits and provide structured training for staff on food safety principles and ISO 22000 requirements.
The consultancy will also conduct a pre-certification audit to identify any gaps before the official certification process. To ensure successful implementation, sufficient time will be given for the SME’s management and staff to test and operationalize the new systems. The support will aim to make the changes practical and cost-effective. The technical assistance is recommended to start once the SME's new automated abattoir is operational, integrating the new processes holistically. This effort complements earlier support from IFAD and helps the SME prepare for ISO certification, ultimately enhancing its competitiveness in local markets and positioning it for potential international expansion.
