Introduction

University Innovation Pods (UniPods) are a groundbreaking initiative under timbuktoo located in a top technical public university with the objective of supporting youth innovation at the critical time in their life cycle, at ideation and prototyping. UniPods offer a unique blend of high-tech maker spaces, design labs, and technology transfer offices, providing a comprehensive environment for young innovators to develop their ideas, create prototypes, and receive guidance on market entry and intellectual property protection. In summary the spaces that constitute UniPod are described below:

 ·         Design Lab – to affect a mind shift in the way students learn and apply their knowledge to problem solving

·         Rapid Prototyping Lab – to empower students to iteratively bring ideas to life through prototypes that test functionality and feasibility of concepts

·         Fabrication Lab (wood and metal) – to provide students with a space to create scaled up versions of their prototypes.

·         Sustainable and Ecofriendly technologies To develop and promote environmentally sustainable technologies, focusing on renewable energy, waste management, and resource conservation.

·         Creatives Lab To explore and develop artistic and creative talents through digital art, graphic design, multimedia production, and other forms of creative expression.

·         AI&Robotics Lab – A generic AI focused lab that aims to harness the power of AI and a cross-cutting enabler of innovation and value creation.

 In the last 3 years UNDP has supported the establishment of 25 UniPods across the continent.

 However, due to the nature of the equipment and programs running in UniPods there is need to build the technical capacities of UniPods to empower them to reach their full potential and intended impact. Therefore, RBA-UNDP Office intends to establish  an LTA to engage a qualified international firm to provide the UniPods network with support in the following key areas;

·         Installation of UniPods equipment in each of the 8 labs that make up UniPods.

·         Training of staff on the use of equipment for prototyping

·         Providing continuous remote technical support and maintenance.

The successful firm will be expected to travel to UniPod countries upon request and spend 10 working days installing and training in 13 African UNDP Country Offices.
