Introduction
Cooling provided by air conditioning and refrigeration systems is essential for Sustainable Development. However, cooling also generates a serious carbon footprint, directly through emissions of greenhouse gas refrigerants and indirectly through consumption of electricity generated using fossil fuels. Cooling is currently estimated to consume around 20% of the world’s electricity consumption in buildings. The energy demand for space cooling is expected to be triple by 2050, fuelled by rising temperatures and economic prosperity. If cooling efficiency is not improved significantly, an increase in greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption and refrigerants will occur, further warming the planet.
Digital tools like the Internet of Things (IoT) can improve the operation of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) systems and provide valuable insights that can significantly enhance the energy efficiency of cooling systems. The improvement in energy efficiency leads to reduced energy consumption, reduce in greenhouse gas emissions and savings in energy and operational costs. By implementing digital cooling strategies, cities can reduce the urban heat island effect, minimize electricity consumption, and thereby, reduce the use of fossil fuels and alleviate pressure on power grids during peak times.
