Introduction

Improving Local Development to Increase the Resilience of Host Communities and Refugees in North Jordan (LED) builds on two programmes aiming to support Decentralisation financed by the European Union and executed by UNDP, DLDSP[1] , and DAILL[2].  The “Programme” fills a very large void in local administrations, which is the lack of financial resources to invest in development projects. In recent years there has been a profusion of development plans, and local economic development strategies; however, they are not backed up by the resources to implement them.  The availability of funds will encourage and test new forms of public-private collaboration that include various municipalities and private investors.

The Ajloun Agricultural-Tourism Route is designed to drive balanced, sustainable growth in revenue and job opportunities while ensuring geographic and seasonal diversity. By prioritizing host community benefits, the project seeks to enhance the quality of life for locals and create a thriving destination that reflects the region's unique offerings. This initiative positions the Route as the cornerstone of tourism in Ajloun, integrating efforts with key local stakeholders and leveraging a rich blend of natural, cultural, and historical assets. These include green spaces, archaeological and religious landmarks, and a strong commitment from royal and national entities to develop the area.

The Route's primary goal is to offer visitors distinctive, geographically rooted experiences that support investment and economic development. Spanning from Ajloun Castle to the Natural Reserve Forest, the project will establish a connected network of visitor attractions, featuring farms with seasonal crops, small and medium-sized businesses, and a variety of landscapes, uplands, and trails. Ajloun's remarkable natural heritage—characterized by diverse vistas, sounds, and wildlife—further enriches the visitor experience, fostering opportunities to engage with and learn from the environment.
