PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The United Nations Development Program in Kazakhstan (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, is implementing the UNDP-GEF project “Promotion of Sustainable Agricultural Production System and Conservation of Landscape Ecosystems in Northern Kazakhstan” (hereinafter - the Project), aimed at promoting large-scale adoption of effective land management technologies and conservation approaches, as well as promoting “green” value chains to reduce degradation of productive agricultural lands and forests.

Sustainable land use and ecosystem management approaches and practices at the landscape level will be tested and piloted for decision-making at the national and provincial levels. The project structure involves work on 4 key components:

Component 1: Integrated land use planning - demonstration of approaches, methods and schemes to improve the effectiveness of spatial planning and land use management at the landscape level to maintain ecosystem services and mitigate land degradation in the northern regions of Kazakhstan;

Component 2: Agricultural environmental incentives and financial instruments to support sustainable production of agricultural products and important value chains will be developed and piloted under this component;

Component 3: Protection and restoration of natural habitats and enhancement of ecosystem functions. This component includes a range of conservation activities to address problems arising from agricultural land interference with related high-value ecosystems;

Component 4: Raising awareness among farmers, local communities, Government and the general public about the benefits of sustainable food production.
