Introduction
Designing, Developing, and Staging 5 Theater Drama Performances in Badulla, Nuwara-Eliya, Kurunegala, Batticaloa and Jaffna Districts in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is navigating a phase of economic recovery and political transformation after emerging from an economic crisis. The ripple effects of this crisis have been deeply felt across communities, affecting social cohesion and exacerbating existing inequalities. The spread of hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, and incitement (HDMI), both online and offline, further amplifies tensions and poses significant threats to peaceful coexistence. In this context, marginalized groups, including women, youth, and children, bear the brunt of the hardships, with women-headed households often facing increased vulnerabilities due to intersecting economic, social, and cultural pressures. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches to educate and engage the public, fostering understanding, tolerance, and collective action to counter hate speech and disinformation.
Recognizing the transformative potential of the arts in shaping narratives and promoting positive values, this intervention seeks to utilize theater as a tool to educate the public on social cohesion and conflict prevention.
Objective;
The objective of this intervention is to utilize theater as an innovative medium to raise awareness on hate speech, disinformation, misinformation, and incitement (HDMI) across diverse communities in Sri Lanka. By addressing these issues creatively and effectively, the initiative aims to foster social cohesion, encourage dialogue, and promote mutual understanding among individuals and families, especially in socio-politically sensitive areas. The selected service provider will be responsible for designing, developing, and staging 5 drama performances in each of the following districts: Badulla, Nuwara-Eliya, Kurunegala, Batticaloa and Jaffna.
Please refer to the TOR for details.
