Introduction :

Project:

Construction of 250kg/hr Incinerator building at Mpilo Central Hospital

Purpose:

Healthcare waste (HCW) is defined as the total waste stream from a healthcare facility (HCF) that includes sharps, non-sharps, blood, body-parts, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and radioactive materials. Globally an estimated 16 billion injections are administered annually, however not all needles and syringes are disposed of safely afterwards (WHO,2018). Health care waste contains potentially harmful microorganisms that can infect hospital patients, health workers and the general public. The following challenges have been experienced in HCWM in Zimbabwe, inadequate budget resource allocation, non-formalization of HCWM in institution, technological and structural challenges in minimisation, segregation, handling, storage, transportation, treatment, and disposal facilities.

According to the Zimbabwe 2021 Health Budget Brief The health sector is saddled with several challenges that continue to affect the delivery and access of quality health services. The COVID-19 pandemic erupted when the country’s health system faced numerous challenges. The country has not been spared by the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, which over-stretched and tested the resilience of the sector to major shocks.

Considering the above challenges, the UNDP through the Global Fund availed fund to support the construction of an incinerator at Mpilo Central Hospital and Sally Mugabe Hospital grounds to facilitate proper HCWM. Currently the available incinerators at the institutions are failing to meet the minimum requirements including holding capacity and temperatures for properly treating the waste.

The project is located at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo and Sally MUGABE Hospital in Harare Zimbabwe.
