Introduction :

Simplification of selected laws of Sri Lanka.

The Support for Justice Sector – JURE Project is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Justice, the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to improve justice for all in Sri Lanka. The project aims to pave the way to building an inclusive justice sector in Sri Lanka through innovative reforms, strengthened institutions and enhanced access to justice.

There is a significant gap in knowledge on the part of the public on laws and existing avenues of redressal due to various reasons, in some instances because of the intricate language of the laws in the country.  In this context, sensitising the public by making available simplified laws is a key priority to ensure access to justice. Citizens’ knowledge about key civil, criminal and commercial laws could translate into promoting rule of law in the long-term.

OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF INTERVENTION

The overarching objective of this assignment is to simplify selected legislation in Sinhala and Tamil languages with the aim of improving awareness of the public on these laws and mechanisms set up thereunder for their access for services.

The Service Provider would need to simplify 30 laws and/regulations and compile them in a user-friendly manner to the public.
