Introduction
INNOVATION CHALLENGE
KJPII Innovation Challenge: Local Solutions for a Greener Kigoma
This Innovation Challenge operates within the framework of the Kigoma Joint Programme Phase II (KJPII)—a flagship initiative of the Government of Tanzania and the United Nations dedicated to promoting inclusive and sustainable development in Kigoma Region. Kigoma is a predominantly rural and geographically remote area with limited access to reliable and affordable energy services. Most communities rely on traditional biomass for cooking and lighting, leading to environmental degradation, adverse health effects, and constrained economic opportunities.
The challenge supports the implementation of a broad range of activities that focus on unlocking green, community-based livelihood opportunities through renewable energy, climate adaptation, and environmental entrepreneurship. Given Kigoma’s unique development challenges and its strategic importance, the Innovation Challenge is designed to identify and support locally appropriate solutions that can transform energy access, promote sustainable livelihoods, and improve resilience to climate change.
